1. It’s Cheap!
While we all love a luxurious trip, we sometimes don’t like the price tag that comes along with it. Dubrovnik, for the most part, is still a pretty inexpensive destination. The hotels, beach front restaurants, and activities that are very affordable.
Skip the hotel all together and stay at an amazing Airbnb. We stayed in this one and it was situated perfectly in the middle of the Old City and Lapad (the beach side). Everything was within walking distance and it was close to a bus stop. The hosts were absolutely amazing and very accommodating.
2. The Architecture!
Whether your an architecture junkie, a beach goer, or a Game of Thrones fan, this city is exceptional.
One of the most The interior of the Cathedral is rich in treasure–especially in the Treasury. There are 138 gold and silver reliquaries–some of which are set with jewels or decorated by reliefs, and most of which were made by Dubrovnik goldsmiths from the 11th to 17th centuries. The reliquaries contain bits and pieces of patron saint of Dubrovnik: St. Blasius, including reliquaries of the head, and the arm. The treasury also holds an alleged fragment of the Holy Cross.
There are also artistic treasures in the Cathedral. Over the main altar, there’s a polyptych of the Assumption of the Virgin from Titian’s studio and a painting attributed to Raphael in the Treasury.
Walking the city walls should not be skipped. It is about 2km long and you will be able to enjoy views of the crowded Stradun and the crystal clear Adriatic Sea. But get there early! You will want to beat the cruise trip crowds otherwise it will take you triple the time.
For the Game of Thrones fans, book a GOT walking tour or plan out your own. Either way, you will be able to walk the steps of King’s Landing, enjoy the same views as Blackwater Bay, and stroll through the Bokar Fortress. You may even be able to sit on the Iron Throne if you book tickets in advance.
3. Crystal Clear Water
The Adriatic Sea, part of the Mediterranean Sea, is crystal clear, warm, and unforgettably relaxing.
Banje Beach is probably Dubrovnik’s most stunning beach, located right in front of Dubrovnik Old Town – If you do nothing else, you have to spend an hour on this beach just for the view alone.
The other side of the city, Lapad, was one of our favorite spots. Full of locals, beautiful hotels and restaurants, it perfect for people watching or just enjoying a beer with a fabulous view.
Find a spot on the rocks along the beach cliffs and decend into the water by one of the many ladders attached to the rocks. For less than $20 a day, you can also rent a comfy lounge chair at one of the resorts and enjoy sunbathing and cocktails.
4. All the Seafood!
If you like seafood, Dubrovnik is the perfect spot for you. Situated along the Adriatic, the cuisine has a blend of Mediterranean and Italian flavors. Many restaurants feature delicious, freshly caught seafood that is either fried or cooked in an exquisite sauce. If you have some extra time, take a quick tour down the Pelješac peninsula, to the bay of Mali Ston for their world famous oysters.
